A 16” diameter may seem large to some players, but it is by far the most common size for a rope tensioned snare.
A 16” diameter puts the center of the drum at a comfortable distance from the body when playing a 17” (ish) stick.
Rope drum hoops are inherently taller than triple flanged hoops. The smaller the diameter, the higher angle needed to play. Keeping the stick angle low allows for correct playing angle.

The strength of the polymer hoop allows us to make the shortest batter hoop possible as an option. With the lowrider hoop, our 16” hoops play at a lower angle than any other size. Above is a visualization of 14” to 17” stick angles.
