Calfskin has always had a special place in our hearts, but has run into difficulties over the years. Availability, consistency, durability, and cost have turned many players away from the amazing sound produced by calfskin.
What started as a joke around the shop, "let's grow calfskin in a petri dish," morphed into our own Frankenstein project of recreating the sound feel, and even look of natural calf using all natural ingredients.
Vegan calf? No. Our formula, and its many iterations, is based on the protein structure of real calfskin, using a refined natural material as the lattice.
How many dozens of marketed drumheads with the word "calf" or "Skin" in them actually sound like calf?
What makes natural heads sound different than any petroleum-based film? Consistent membranes move in very consistent ways. Variations make the difference. Part of the process that we use for creating Mammoth heads is micro "crackle flats." Think of this as the way a computer can model water movement using only flat geometries with hinged joints. After creating the crackle flats, they are sealed with a more flexible formula that allows them to move freely and create a nuanced calfskin sound.

Welded Steel fleshoop 34"-40", Wooden fleshoop 22"-32"
Sound: It sounds like calfskin. It sounds nothing like Mylar. It has notes of pepper.
Durability: We've tested 42 iterations of the formula and lattice. No. 42 was on a rudimental bass drum for 4 months of daily "bet you can't break it" testing. We weren't able to dimple it, let alone break it. Rainy day humidity testing side-by-side with calfskin has proven that, although sensitive to moisture in the air, Mammoth remains tonal, and playable when the calfskin became, well, like damp calfskin.
Mammoth is natural, protein-based, with lipids, casein, and other organic compounds. It is not waterproof, and direct contact with water should be avoided.
Concert bass sizes are built on 3/8" welded steel fleshoops.
"Calfskin drumheads offer a soft feel on impact, along with the clear articulation and natural overtones that synthetic films have been reaching for since the 1950's. After 3/4 of a century, these oil-based heads still sound and feel like plastic.
Loyal Drums' Mammoth heads have the organic sound and feel of calfskin, but also offer improved consistency, durability, and affordability when compared to today's premium calfskin drumheads."

Mammoth has a bounce similar to calf, but with a little more spring. Head to head consistency for rudimental players is a welcomed advancement.
